Magnet Designation Received by St. Lucie Medical Center
Port St. Lucie, FL (December 14, 2009) - The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the worlds largest and most prestigious nurse credentialing organization presented its highest designation for excellence in nursing care to St. Lucie Medical Center. Magnet Designation is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can achieve, and places St. Lucie Medical Center among the five percent of hospitals in the country that have achieved this prestigious distinction.
Receiving the Magnet distinction through a unanimous decision from the Magnet Commission validates the ongoing efforts put forth by the staff at St. Lucie Medical Center in delivering the best possible care to our community, said Nancy Hilton, MN, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at St. Lucie Medical Center. It is not only a nursing distinction; it is the culmination of teamwork among all disciplines leading to excellence in patient care.
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that exhibit the highest quality in nursing practice and adherence to national standards and delivery of nursing services. To earn this distinction, organizations face a stringent evaluation that consists of documentation review, site visit and an extensive evaluation of nursing services. Magnet designated hospitals consistently outperform others in not only recruiting and retaining nurses, but positive patient outcomes as well. Research shows there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:
- Healthcare consumers have more confidence in the overall quality of a hospital if it has achieved the level of excellence established by the Magnet Recognition Program.
- Magnet designated facilities consistently outperform other facilities in recruiting and retaining nurses resulting in increased stability in patient care and patient satisfaction.
- Because quality nursing is one of the most important factors in enlisting high caliber physicians and specialists, Magnet status becomes an attractive force that extends to the entire facility.
During the Magnet site visit, St. Lucie Medical Center received exemplary performance in:
- Quality of Nursing Leadership
- Community Partnership
- Nursing, Ancillary and Physician Collaboration
This is truly an outstanding organizational achievement; it takes an entire organization to be worthy of Magnet Designation, said Gary Cantrell, President and CEO of St. Lucie Medical Center. This is a proud moment for every employee at St. Lucie Medical Center, to be among the 23 Magnet hospitals in Florida delivering excellent care to our community.
- Magnet Designation is valid for 4 years
- St. Lucie Medical Center is the 23rd Magnet hospital in Florida
- Only 5% of hospitals in the nation are recognized as Magnet facilities.
- First Magnet Hospital on the Treasure Coast
